What Researchers Can Learn About Presentations from Toastmasters

Three ways to build presentation skills without joining a Toastmasters club:
Record a full run-through on your phone or laptop. Watch it once with the sound off (to assess body language) and once without looking at the screen (to assess vocal delivery). The goal is not perfection. It is familiarity. A speaker who knows their material well enough to respond to the room is more compelling than one who is focused on getting to the next slide.
Present to a non-specialist. If they can follow your key finding and explain it back to you, your clarity is sufficient. If they cannot, revise before you reach the conference room.
Time yourself. Most researchers run long. Beforehand, find out how long you are allowed to speak and practice sticking to that limit.
